El Garrafón National Park

The coral reefs in the waters just off of the El Garrafón National Park Island are some of the most visited in the Mexican Caribbean. Located in shallow waters, the reefs provide an excellent opportunity for snorkeling and watching colorful fish. More experienced divers may opt for a dip along one of the largest reefs in the Caribbean, Manchones.

Beaches

When Cancun was being considered as a resort development area back in the 70's, the region's most obvious drawing card was that it was all beach. Shaped like a 7, the down stroke is one long continuous white sand beach fronting the Caribbean Sea. Swimming is recommended only by the major hotels, with life guards, due to the dangerous undertow. At the top of the 7, at Punta Cancun, is Playa Chac Mool, a public non-hotel beach with restaurants. Heading around the point going west are the beaches of Bahia de Mujeres which are much safer for swimming.

Xcaret

Once a precious spot open to all. There are still Maya ruins and a beautiful inlet on the site, but much of the rest has been created or altered using dynamite, jackhammers and other terra-forming techniques.

Museo INAH

At this archaeological museum, most of the items - including jewelry, masks and intentionally deformed skulls - are from the postclassic period. There's also part of a classic-period hieroglyphic staircase and the stucco head that gave the local archaeological zone its name of El Rey. Most of the informative signs are in Spanish only, but at the ticket counter you can get a fractured-English information sheet detailing the contents of the museum's 47 showcases.
